The Fundaments of Graphic Design Course Outline

Class 1 - The Purpose of Design
Instructor - Matt Feener
We will explore the fundamentals of visual communication, examining design as a communication art while investigating the elements that create both strength and weakness in design practice.
Class 2 - The Art of Design
Instructor - Matt Feener
Develop visual literacy by learning to "see" like designers, explore influential art movements and styles throughout history, studying famous designers and their contributions, and examine the tension between classic traditions and modern rule-breaking approaches.
Class 3 - The Form of Design
Instructor - Lyndon Gehman
Learn the foundational principles of visual composition, including symmetry and asymmetry, balance, scale and proportion, hierarchy and emphasis, contrast and similarity, focal point and eye path development, and typography; all essential elements for creating impactful and effective design work.
Class 4 - The Color of Design
Instructor - Lyndon Gehman
Dive into the emotional and technical aspects of color application, examining how colors influence our emotional responses, exploring comprehensive color theory, analyzing the emotional impact of different color choices, and learning about color spaces, models, and the color wheel.
Class 5 - The Performance of Design

Clarify the professional practice of design by distinguishing between art and design, examining designers' ethical and practical responsibilities, exploring diverse job opportunities and professional roles, and mastering essential industry software and tools.
Class 6 - The Joy of Design

Celebrate the divine origins of creativity by exploring God as the ultimate designer. Exercise creative problem-solving abilities, shape audience perception through intentional design choices, embrace continual refinement and personal growth, develop constructive critique skills, and apply these principles in a collaborative class critique session finale!
